Measuring Tape Activities In Teaching Mathematical Skills For Kids
Measuring tape is a useful tool in teaching little ones Math skills. Learning how to measure can actually be enjoyable for children when the lessons are introduced through enjoyable activities as well as games. Starting with simple tasks that a kid can easily master and moving on to multi-step challenges, tape measure activities boost basic skills and build a child's self confidence in problem solving. Here are a few of the learning filled activities which can be used in teaching measuring skills.
You can give every child with a measuring tape marked in 1-inch intervals only. Pair children so that 1 child can hold on the end of the measuring tape as they measure. Challenge kids to be on a scavenger hunt in the room and find 12 items that measure from 1 inch to 12 inches. Then, give boys and girls construction paper and then ask them to draw the items to scale like a 1-inch eraser and a 6-inch crayon. Play a game of "alien invasion" to boost measuring skills up to 6 feet. Begin by putting little ones in groups; give every group with different lists titled "Alien Description" and the following items "leg length, arm length, antenna length, hand length and total length.
Follow each with numbers in feet and/or inches that will produce a bizarre looking character. Provide kids butcher paper and let them create their aliens and post them on the wall. You could also ask children to experiment with measuring circumference. Go for a walk around the school with tape measures in hand and search for cylindrical items such as columns, poles, table legs, wastebaskets and round tables to measure. Back in the classroom, put children in groups, hand out construction paper and ask little ones to make tubes of various heights and circumference. For example, you may ask them to make a red tube 12 inches in height with a 5-inch s.
Give students measuring tapes with ½- and ¼-inch markings once they have mastered measuring in inches. Practice measuring small items and drawing lines of various lengths. For some added motivation, after boys and girls have drawn their lines, give them lengths of red licorice sticks and plastic knives and ask them to cut off specific lengths involving fractions. Have them compare their work with a partner just before devouring their licorice lines.
Activities utilizing measuring tape are one example of a good concrete exercise that frequently aid children better grasp abstract math skills. Combine the measuring skills boys and girls have learned by helping them build a room miniature golf course which can be used alternately by small groups. Begin by creating a diagram on paper showing pupils exactly what the golf course will appear like: poster board tubes taped to the floor using painters tape will be specific lengths and diameters separated by specific lengths of floor space. Use measurements which include number of feet, inches, quarter and half inches. For putters, tape empty juice cans whose open ends have been covered with vinyl tape to yardsticks.
