Getting Rid of Acne Is Going to be Simple With Blue Light Acne Treatments

Blue light acne treatment is valuable in helping to eliminate acne. Here is the reason blue light is successful in treating acne.

Acne is a common skin condition among adolescents and some adults. Pimples and other sores result from pores that become plugged with a mass of skin oil (sebum) and dead skin cells. Bacteria living in the plugged up pore start multiplying and inflame adjacent tissues. The irritated spots are noticeably red and feel sore and become the pimples we associate with acne.

There are several common therapies associated with acne prevention. Removing excess oils from the skin stands out as the most important step. A mild anti-bacterial gel or cream is then used to kill surface bacteria. Finally a mild exfoliant gel or cream is employed to help loosen dead skin cells so they can be washed away. By eliminating the three components essential for acne (excess oil, bacteria, and dead skin cells) most acne can be prevented.

Whiteheads or blackheads are the preliminary expressions of a plugged up pore. These are tiny blemishes and differ because of the position of the plug. If the clog is close to the surface of the skin the clog becomes oxidized and turns dark forming a blackhead. When the clog is further down into the pore, the surface can close in around the pore keeping it light in color which produces a whitehead.

Cells adjoining the pore grow red, irritated and form a pimple because the bacteria in the plugged up pore start multiplying. The blemish can grow more severe if the infection spreads outside the pore. Pressure on the pimple can drive the infection into the sebaceous gland and perhaps rupture the cell structure permitting the infection to spread to lower layers of the skin.

You can understand how vital it is to eliminate the bacteria at the location of the pimple. This will relieve the irritation and decrease the dimensions and intensity of the blemish. Though some anit-biotic prescription medications are prescribed for severe acne, the vast majority of people can benefit to a great extent from more localized treatments.

Acne light treatment is one such localized treatment. Direct exposure to sunlight has been known to help acne. But, full spectrum sunlight can damage the skin. So, scientists have investigated detailed spectral ranges to see what exactly is successful against acne. One of the first groups to research this topic found that light in the violet range activated an organic compound, a porphyrin, in the acne causing bacteria, Propionibacterium acnes. This porphyrin releases a signlet oxygen that eventually kills the bacteria.

To work against the rapidly multiplying bacteria, several consecutive treatments are required to kill all the bacteria in a pimple. As soon as the bacteria are gone, the swelling decreases and the cells start to heal.

The blue light may be delivered light-emitting diodes (LEDs), lasers, fluorescent lamps, or even bright full spectrum light. An array of special fluorescent lights is used in the Dusa Blue Light device, often employed by dermatologists, to deliver a 400 nm wavelength blue light. In addition, a lot of dermatologists use Levulan (aminolevulinic acid) on problem areas before the light therapy. The aminolevulinic acid is a photo sensitizing agent that under blue light causes damage to certain skin cells.

While treatments from a dermatologist can cost several hundred dollars each, low cost home devices have found there way to the market. You can find a number of devices on the market ranging is price from around $40 to several hundred dollars.

Bear in mind that blue light acne treatment will not produce immediate results as the skin needs to heal. But many people find blue light acne therapy more effective than benzoyl peroxide and less irritating to their skin.
