Aliens The Truth

Development, Relief And Education For Alien Minors Act Approves House, U.S. Senate Has Yet To Vote On It

In a party-line election yesterday, the House of Representatives passed the DREAM Act. The Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors Act; provides a “path to citizenship” for illegal aliens who came to the country as children. The Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors Act, isn't assured yet, however. The Senate has promised a filibuster. The Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors Act could even allow those included to obtain payday cash loans at some time.

Wishing the DREAM Act could be a 'path to citizenship'

The focus of the DREAM Act is children under 16 that are illegal immigrants. They generally were brought to the U.S. by someone else. Young adults who apply for citizenship through the Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors Act would be given a six-year "temporary" status. During that time, they would be required to go to college on their own dime or serve in the United States military.

The effect of the Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors Act

There is a lot of debate over the DREAM Act. Most are arguing that “amnesty” is being given to too many immigrants using the bill. It would make it legal for about 2 million illegal immigrants to be in the country. Others take issue with the fact that these immigrants would be able to pay in-state tuition for school. Proponents of the bill, however, point out that the bill targets only young adults who were not given an option in coming to the country. The six-year "trial period" would provide them nothing other than a legal right to be in the country; no PELL grants, no welfare, just a possibility to "prove themselves.".

Election status of DREAM Act

Though the Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors Act approved the House of representatives on a 216-198 mostly party-line vote; it might not become law. The DREAM Act may never pass if the U.S. Senate puts up a filibuster. The Homeland Security Secretary and Education Secretary have both come out in support of the DREAM Act. There would be increased economic activity and decreased enforcement costs, suggests the Congressional Budget Office, if the Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors Act does pass. This could mean a $1.4 billion drop in the federal deficit too. Obama has agreed to sign the Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors Act if it approves the Senate too.
