A visit to the Sulphide Street Railway Museum, with Campervan Hire Sydney, will show in entertaining detail, the events which surround Australia's only enemy attack on home turf in World War One.
Broken Hill was settled by folk from many countries as they swarmed to the Damaged Hill silver and zinc mines in the nineteenth century. And as frequently happens, events in a home country can frequently lead straight to robust feelings in the new one. The New Years Day shooting in 1915 at Damaged Hill, is one such example and involves some Turks with an ice-cream cart and some Australians on their way to a picnic.
The tale goes, while it is truth instead of fiction, that group of Australian Oddfellows (organisation of folk dedicated to giving help to others in time of need),were travelling by train from Broken Hill to close by Silverton, for a New Years Day Picnic. As the train left the fringes of the eastern side of Broken Hill, it passed an ice-cream cart flying a Turkish flag.
2 men under the Turkish flag had rifles and fired 20, perhaps 30 rounds at the train. Fire was returned by the trains guard, however some occupants on the train were hurt. The Turks retired to their camel camp close by, were bailed up by local police and a full on shoot-out ensued. 4 folks died and 7 were injured in the fracas.
Following the forced exodus of six Austrians, 4 Germans and one Turk from Broken Hill the following day, 'enemy aliens ' were afterward interred for the period of the war. Make sure to visit the Railway Museum in Damaged Hill for the complete details and think about the whims of life in uncertain times, as well as Australia's only attack at home in WWI.
